The TT Fun Lab shows all the fun sides of table tennis, people gets the possibility to play on different tables, with different materials, alone against a robot or together. It is a space where the whole family has fun. Special invitations will go out to include minority groups, such as refugees, persons with a disability or socially disadvantaged youth.

Context:

Leipzig has a population of almost 600.000 inhabitants. The growing and intercultural city is the headquarter of the ITTF Foundation. This non-profit organisation was recently established by the International Table Tennis Federation to promote solidarity through table tennis on a worldwide level. The Foundation aims to ease the access to table tennis for all and different kind of people, to show the recreational and healthy side of table tennis and to use the sport for positive social
outcomes.
Its first TT fun lab will open in Leipzig and offers a possibility for inhabitants and tourists to play the game in a safe and recreational atmosphere in one of the many green areas of the city.

Project Content:

The ITTF Foundation believes in the power of table tennis to unite people. It is a perfect sport to better health, get together, learn about fair play and to have fun. Table tennis can be played by all, regardless of age, culture, social status or physical ability. The TT Fun Lab shows all the fun sides of table tennis, people get the possibility to play on different tables, with different materials, alone against a robot or together. It is a space where the whole family has fun. Special invitations will go out to include minority groups, such as refugees, persons with a disability or socially disadvantaged youth.

Objectives:

  • Present table tennis as a healthy and fun game for all.
  • Unite people through the practice of table tennis, such as old and young, female and male, rich and poor, locals and foreigners.

Expected outcomes:

  • 4 public double tournaments per year mixing different target groups
  • An average of 200 persons using the facilities per month in the first year (summer period)
  • Entry in official registers about sport facilities in the city of Leipzig
  • Establish at least 2 partnerships per year with non-sportive initiatives, such as organisations working with refugees or persons with specific needs.
