History of the Festival:

The WTT4H Festival expanded due to the growing enthusiasm of the World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships and the chance to show the kind of benefits practicing sport can have on other neurological disorders. The event promotes the positive benefits of playing table tennis on health in general, not only on people with the mentioned diseases, but also for sickness prevention, staying active in general, as part of its larger remit and investment from the ITTF Group and Foundation.

From November 1-5 2023, the Mediterranean island of Crete hosted the third World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships, along with the inaugural World Alzheimer’s Table Tennis Championships and the first World Table Tennis for Health Congress. These events together launched the inaugural World Table Tennis for Health Festival.

Key highlights:

  • Participants from 5 continents competed in the World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships (WPTTC) in Greece.
  • In 2022, the ITTF Foundation won Gold for ‘Best Sport Governing Body Initiative’ for organising the WPTTC (3 editions have taken place so far).
  • In Greece, the festival championships as well as the congress was broadcasted live on YouTube with live views of more than 8,000.
  • The World Table Tennis for Health Congress had esteemed global speakers including from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Contribution to the Global Goals

Target 3.4 By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.
