European Union Funded Erasmus+ Project on Table Tennis for Health

Spin for Well-being: Active lifestyles through therapeutic table tennis for individuals with Neurodegenerative diseases

About SWAN

Spin for Well-being: Active lifestyles through therapeutic TT for individuals with Neurodegenerative diseases (SWAN) is a European Union funded 26-month Erasmus+ project aiming to enhance the health of people affected by neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, through table tennis.

The acronym SWAN symbolises growth and renewal. Just as a swan molts its feathers and grows new ones, this project seeks to help individuals with NDDs form new neural connections through physical activity. Beyond improving individual well-being, SWAN also aims to build a network of stakeholders interested in the therapeutic benefits of table tennis and promote the integration of such programmes in various settings—including care homes, sports organisations, and local communities.

Understanding the Context

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) affect approximately 1.5 million people across Europe, with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s being among the most common. Research shows that physical exercise, such as table tennis, not only helps reduce the risk of NDDs but can also slow their progression after diagnosis.

Recognising these benefits, the SWAN project aims to develop and evaluate a structured table tennis intervention for individuals with NDDs—promoting social inclusion, equal access to sports, and health-enhancing physical activity. The project also seeks to educate stakeholders and establish guidelines for integrating table tennis programmes into different care and community settings.

Project Objectives

  • Build a collaborative transnational network: Establish a consortium of diverse organisations across seven EU countries to share knowledge and best practices in table tennis health programmes for NDDs.
  • Develop and Disseminate Educational Materials: Create and implement a training curriculum that equips stakeholders with both the theoretical and practical tools needed to implement effective table tennis interventions.
  • Implement and Evaluate Specialized Interventions: Design and evaluate targeted table tennis curriculums for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients to improve their physical, cognitive, and social well-being.
  • Raise Awareness and Make an Impact: Share our findings widely by participating in key events and creating informative materials that drive transformative change in the intersection of sports and NDD care.

Key Project Activities

  • Research & Insights: Conduct comprehensive research to identify successful table tennis for health initiatives, combining literature review and real-world best practices.
  • Training & Education: Develop an online training curriculum that blends NDD knowledge with practical table tennis methodologies, equipping trainers and caregivers with the skills to run effective programmes.
  • Specialised Interventions: Implement and evaluate tailored table tennis programmes for individuals with NDDs in Greece, Bulgaria, and Spain, assessing their impact on physical, cognitive, and social well-being.
  • Awareness & Outreach: Disseminate findings through structured activities, including an informative guidebook and participation in the World Table Tennis for Health Festivals (2025 & 2026).

Project Target Groups

  • Individuals with NDDs: Particularly those with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, who will benefit directly from tailored table tennis interventions
  • Care Providers & Institutions: Nursing homes, health centers, and rehabilitation facilities
  • Trainers & Supporting Staff: Coaches, instructors, and caregivers
  • Sports & Community Organisations: Sports clubs and federations
  • Families & Patient Associations: Those who support and advocat for individuals with NDDs.
  • General Public: The wider community which supports and spreads awareness
