Dream Building Fund Alumni in Uganda Receive Table Tennis Scholarships

Three Slum Ping Pong project participants, Shafi, Morris, and Ebenezer have received table tennis scholarships to continue their education at Standard High School – Zzana, Uganda. Supported by the Dream Building Fund, the three champs are the true witnesses of how table tennis can transform lives for disadvantaged children in slums.

I am very excited about the news and cannot wait to start high school. I like going to school but never thought I would have the chance to continue after primary school. Going to school is expensive, my family couldn’t afford it if I did not get the scholarship. – Ebenezer, scholarship recipient.

Breaking the chain of poverty

In Kampala, Uganda, poverty has always been one of the most pressing social issues. While the Ugandan government has made primary school free for all children, the parents/guardians are still expected to pay tuition fees, and many simply do not have the financial means to do so. This leads to the perpetuation of the poverty cycle, and Slum Ping Pong wants to stop it. – Emmanuel Bale John Bazira, founder of Slum Ping Pong.

The Dream Building Fund had been supporting Slum Ping Pong since 2019, and we are very proud of the achievement of Shafi, Morris, and Ebenezer.

I will continue to come to Slum Ping Pong during school holidays. I want to thank my coach Gen. Sec Daniel Mutabazi, thank you for motivating me and making all this possible. I like table tennis a lot and this scholarship means so much to me and my family. – Morris, scholarship recipient.

More good news to come

As one of our Dream Building Fund initiatives, the success of Slum Ping Pong is even greater than its ambition. Initially vowed to provide table tennis training opportunities, sports equipment and refreshment for at least 100 slum children, the initiative has progressed to sponsoring 50 primary school students in terms of tuition, daily lunches and table tennis sessions.

The success of Slum Ping Pong has attracted local sponsors to join their quest in breaking the chain of poverty and creating positive social change among slum children in Uganda through table tennis.
